Radio Amateurs or 'HAMS' use two way radio stations from their Homes, Cars, Boats, Radio Clubs and outdoors to communicate with others across Town or across the World.
Many thousands of Australians and Millions Worldwide enjoy the benefits of Amateur Radio.
You also can become an Amateur Radio operator by passing a simple test in Theory and Regulations.
Morse Code is NO longer a requirement, but a Test is still available if you wish to use this facility.
"Curious to know how things work"?
Whether it is building Radio transmitters, Erecting Antennas or exploring new ways to link computers via radio,
'GRES' HAMS in Geelong are doing it. There are many different kinds of Amateur Radio activities.

Then there are the competitive activities like, Radio Contesting, Amateur Radio Direction Finding (which is like Orienteering using a Radio). Some bounce radio signals off the Moon, others talk by using the Satellites while others communicate  locally by using Signal repeaters.

The practical and dedicated works carried out by Amateur operators.

Here in Geelong we can provide    Emergency Radio communications in   the event of Flood, Bush Fire or Natural Disaster through the WlCEN Organisation
  (Wireless Institute Civil Emergency  Network).
We also provide Radio communication for the Otway Challenge Bike ride, for the Heart Foundation,  The Bellarine 100Km bike ride for the
LUPUS Foundation, and in partnership  with the Ballarat Amateur Radio Group  radio communications for the MARS Challenge a triathlon  (Run, Ride and Canoe Paddle) from Ballarat to Barwon Heads.
The unique feature about Amateur Radio is its Practicality.
As you can see there are so many  different Activities From which you can choose. Unlike CB Radio Operators, Radio Amateurs may use High power on a
Wide selection of Frequencies and Bands .Amateurs also build and modify Equipment to facilitate the usage of these Radio Bands.
