The Judy Stickland Trio gave us a wonderful start to our 2007 Sunday afternoon concert series. Judy sang with Doug McKenzie, a master of harmony, played keyboard & Peter Hannah showing his true versatility, played clarinet, flute, oboe, alto saxophone & tenor saxophone. Judy began with the "A Train", a popular Duke Ellington number & she followed this with Billy Strayhorn's "Satin Doll" --one of Ella Fitzgerald's favourites. Peter & Doug combined with "In a Sentimental Mood" followed by 1960/70s interesting Brazilian rhythms of Burt Bacharat with Hal David lyrics, a Dionne Warwick favourite. Then "Walk on by" followed with a clever drums & timpani backing arranged by Doug on keyboard & sung by Judy. "The Look of Love" made famous by Canadian Diane Crowl is luring everyone back to Burt Bacharah's music. Ballads are a favourite & "A House is not a Home" was the choice for today. Chick Corea made an appearance with modern jazz rhythms from Spain. Judy concluded with a lovely original which she titled "Read my Lips" & gave its first public performance! Our next Sunday afternoon concert is on March 11th at 2.30pm at the Barwon Heads Anglican Church & will feature a fantastic flute performance from Karen Schofield playing French Romantic repertoire & the Australian Phoenix Concerto by John Carmichael accompanied by Melbourne pianist Ann Lewitzka. Do come & bring your friends to support the amazing amount of local talent who perform live at our regular concerts on the second Sunday afternoon in the month, the quality of which is much appreciated. A modest donation of $5 entry & afternoon tea to follow in a friendly atmosphere makes a most enjoyable outing. For those who would like to help support with overhead costs, a membership/friends annual donation of $20 is greatly appreciated. For enquiries please phone Jenny on 52542580 | |
